Magazine Description

Canada's longest living literary journal, The Fiddlehead is published four times a year at the University of New Brunswick. Started in the winter of 1945 by the members of the Bliss Carmen society, the journal was named after that “small plant that grows in the Saint John River valley in the spring and which is said to be symbolic of the sun.” For 67 years, it has continually upheld its mandate to publish accomplished poetry, short fiction, Canadian literature reviews and the occasional personal or literary essay; to discover and promote new writing talent; to represent the Atlantic region's lively cultural and literary diversity; and to place the best of new and established Canadian writing in an international context.

Issue No. 271 features the winners of The Fiddlehead’s annual contests, Kate Finnegan (fiction, “Blues Too Bright”) and Dominique Bernier-Cormier (poetry, “Fabric”); fiction by Steven Benstead, Ann Cavlovic, Shane Goth, and Deirdre Simon Dore; poetry by Tammy Armstrong, Kim Trainor, Norman Dubie, Julie Eliopoulos, Kurt Skov-Nielsen, Barry Dempster, Rocco de Giacomo, Heather Cadsby, and Michael Trussler; with reviews of works by Jan Zwicky, Dimitri Liantinis, Helen Humphreys, Dana Mills, and David Helwig.
