Magazine Description

Canada's longest living literary journal, The Fiddlehead is published four times a year at the University of New Brunswick. Started in the winter of 1945 by the members of the Bliss Carmen society, the journal was named after that “small plant that grows in the Saint John River valley in the spring and which is said to be symbolic of the sun.” For 67 years, it has continually upheld its mandate to publish accomplished poetry, short fiction, Canadian literature reviews and the occasional personal or literary essay; to discover and promote new writing talent; to represent the Atlantic region's lively cultural and literary diversity; and to place the best of new and established Canadian writing in an international context.

The Autumn 2017 issue of The Fiddlehead honors late Candian poet Alden Nowlan who passed away in 1983. This issue also features fiction by Brent van Staalduinen, Carmelinda Scian, Tony Robinson-Smith, David Huebert, Tina Silver, Andrea Routley, Hugh Graham; and poetry by Bardia Sinaee, Darren Bifford, Warren Heiti, Douglas Burnet Smith, Jim Johnstone, Katrina Naomi, Laura Ritland, and Paul Vermeersch. Reviews of books by Angeline Schellenberg, Davis Clerson (translated by Katia Grubisic), Erin Brubacher, Kris Bertin, and Jean McNeil round out the issue.
